Student Data Privacy Consortium

The November SVRTC meeting had 23 members in attendance from the following SVRTC divisions: Amelia, Brunswick, Colonial Heights, Cumberland, Danville, Dinwiddie, Franklin City, Lunenburg, Petersburg, Prince Edward, Southampton, and Sussex.

The program was provided by Dr. Larry Fruth and Ms. Penny Murray who presented information on the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC), which is a special interest group of the Access 4 Learning (A4L) Community. He noted that the overall goal is to develop technical blueprints that allow data to move safely and securely between school software applications. Dr. Fruth reviewed the relevant data privacy laws governing how student data is protected and the importance of having student data privacy agreements (DPAs) in place to ensure that vendors are not using student data in any manner inconsistent with applicable laws. He suggested that all school divisions review the SDPC Resource Registry at https://privacy.a4l.org/sdpc-resource-registry/ to locate resources to help ensure student data privacy. He also recommended that school districts become members, which would allow access to more resources. Ms. Murray noted that video tutorials were available online to assist users, including a district training ‘refresher’ video. Dr. Fruth stated that he would be available to answer questions as lfruth@a4l.org and that Ms. Murry would be available at pmurray@a4l.org.
